We all face making decisions countless times a day. Some are easier to make than others. If you are a decisive person it comes a little easier for you than for others. I don’t know about you, but I find shopping for an airline flight pure drudgery! It often takes more time than I will admit finding the right flight, at the right cost with the right connections, while hopefully avoiding getting up at 3:00 a.m. to get to the airport!
So what does this have to do with finding Christian education? Today parents have overwhelming choices for alternatives to public schools than ever before. It can be a daunting task and very time consuming. What route should I take for my child: Christian schools, homeschooling, hybrid options, or microschools?
If you want to pursue a private Christian school, there are many things one must decide upon: How far are you willing to travel to take your child to school every day? Do you need before/after care? How much can you budget for tuition and other costs involved? Does the school have to be accredited? Is your child interested in extracurricular activities or need special programs? Will my child have to wear a uniform? Do this school offer financial aid, scholarships or payment plans?
If you want to pursue homeschooling as a believer, there are things to consider: Are you committed to growing and learning yourself as your child’s educator? Are you a disciple of Christ in your daily life so as to lead and impart by example to your child? Are you willing to take the time it requires to homeschool and learn by doing? What homeschool co-ops are available to join as part of your child’s support and development? Do you know what is required to be legal in Virginia for homeschooling?
